The Competition

Vancouver Island brings home the gold for the first time since its inception! Derek Lucas, of Buon Amici’s Coffee in Victoria, BC takes top spot and now has earned a free ticket to Toronto to compete in the Nationals in September.

The Canadian Barista & Coffee Academy represented the Canadian Western Regional Barista Competition, Training Workshops and Coffee Fair August 14-15, 2007 at Heritage Hall in Vancouver, BC. The event celebrated the skills of the barista; the consummate artist of the espresso machine. Some of Canada's top "espresso bartenders" competed for the regional title and a spot in the finals at the National Barista Championships to be held in Toronto in September.

Each competitor prepared and served three espresso beverages, one espresso, one cappuccino, and one "signature" drink of their own creation, and presented them to a distinguished panel of judges. Competitors had only fifteen minutes to prepare all twelve drinks while being observed by two technical judges, four sensory judges, and one head judge, while having to talk throughout the entire competition.
